The Sheriff's Emergency Response Team (SERT) was established to support law enforcement functions within the Sheriff's Office. SERT provides specialized services that require the use of special weapons, tactics. The SERT is broken down into 7 separate units. Each unit specializes in a distinct field.
High Risk Entry Unit- This unit has 13 members who are trained in building entry tactics as well as the use of special weapons, and chemical munitions. There are 2 trained tactical medics for the unit.
Marksman Observer Unit- This unit is comprised of 5 members who are specially trained in the use of scoped rifles. This unit may be employed in an over watch, or observation position.
Can you find the hide? Hostage Negotiations Unit- The negotiations unit is staffed with 5 members who are trained to use verbal tactics to help resolve a crisis situation.
Tracking Unit- The tracking unit is made up of 5 members and 4 hounds. Each member is trained in woodland operations and to handle each of the hounds. This unit responds to missing persons as well as criminal apprehension calls.
Mounted Patrol- The mounted patrol is a volunteer group made up of members of the community who volunteer their time and horses to search for missing persons as well as event security.
Explosive Detection Unit- The explosive detection unit has one handler and one K-9. This team is trained in the detection of explosives.
Boat Patrol- The boat patrol works the waterways of the county including the river and lake.
SERT is a voluntary assignment. Each member must undergo a selection process and attend all training.
